Ready to take a little jaunt with me down food lane? C’mon, let’s go!
In 2016 I got to spend a lot more time in the kitchen. Cooking? Yes. Baking? YES! I’ve entered the bread making world. Yeast breads, in particular. I started making different doughs so much that hubby made a baking section for me in our kitchen.
He’s handy that way 🙂
When I’d think about it I’d snap quick photos of fun things I was making with my phone camera. Now that I work at home (translate: mommy duties, housekeeping, home cook, family chief financial officer, laundry, tutor, organizer, managing Graham’s home program & staff) I have this crazy notion about people thinking I don’t do anything all day . But no one can say that I don’t spend time in the kitchen 🙂
How about making your own butter?
Or homemade ricotta cheese? (yes, I know, not ‘true’ ricotta for the purists)
Serve it over crackers with honey – yum!
Yeast breads. My new addiction which makes my hubby happy and sad. Happy because he’s a bread guy. Sad because he’s a bread guy. It’s made him have to go running more 🙂
And, of course, our everyday sandwich bread.
I’ve also explored making our own crackers now.
Hubby is a baker. He’s got his set of tried and true recipes that were passed down to him by his grandmother and also likes to bake quick breads. It’s fun when we work on food projects together. We often say to each other “Yum and Done!” after we’ve produced something we’re proud of.
And he makes all sorts of different shaped German Pancakes (Dutch Baby Pancakes).
The boys will occasionally help in the kitchen too, mostly for baking sweet treats.
Speaking of the boys, I’ll bet I’m the only mom at that makes eggs benedict regularly for breakfast before school. Cold cereal for breakfast? Not in this house. I blame my mom and grandmother, who always fed us hot meals in the morning.
Chocolate is a must have for Alex.
And there’s the regular cooking too, which apparently I haven’t taken many pictures of.
The rice. I had to include that here because there are so many methods on how to make it without it being too sticky or starchy. I had tried everything. EVERYTHING. I’m Asian. Seriously? I can’t make rice?
I grew up on eating it every day but my parents used a rice cooker. My brother also uses a rice cooker. They were no help. I could not figure out how to make it on the stove top. Until this past year, when I discovered how to mimic parboiled rice by soaking it in water for 30 minutes before cooking. Recipe to be posted soon 🙂
So that, in a nutshell, is a teeny smattering of what goes on in our kitchen.
What fun things does your family like to make?
