Joshie is a heavy duty reader. I love that about him.
Joshie has always loved anything creepy (bugs, spiders, monsters). I’m a squeamish girl. I try to love that about him!
However, now that he is in his tweens – wait – I keep forgetting he’s an actual teenager now, his taste in books is leaves me with the strong desire to rewind time back to when I was the one who got to pick the books and I got to read it to him.
Ya, like back in those days!
Recently, he’s moved on from Goosebumps to Brom’s books. He loves fantasy monsters and creatures. He loves that chill that you get from the anticipation of an outrageously hideous monster lurking about. The problem is, these books have foul language. And on occasion, completely unnecessary and inappropriate subject matter. Which stinks, because other than that, these stories are right up J’s alley.
Here is our compromise:
He agreed to let hubby and I read through the book far enough ahead of him that we could white out anything we didn’t want him to put into his little brain. It’s actually working quite well! Except…a school friend of his saw J’s latest book and asked his mom to buy it. Long story short, I immediately contacted his mother and explained to her our screening process….and somehow, I am now the proud editor of both books.
If this keeps up, I’m going to need to buy white out by the case!
Idea: If anyone comes up with the technology for parents to remove language and inappropriate subject matter from digital books…please let me know – I will be the first in line!
